THE MOST UNIQUE GIFT FOR YOUR LOVED ONES

I have been hybridizing orchids for sometime now and many have asked me to register an orchid as a unique gift maybe to a spouse, a parent, a sibling or a loved one to commemorate a birthday. The birthday celebration / party will be over at the end of the day but this birthday momento of an orchid registered under the name of the birthday person will be preserved forever. I have even been asked to register an orchid as a memorial to a dearly departed friend or person and again, this person's name will be preserved in the name of an orchid in eternity eg. Dendrobium Memoria Princess Diana. The deceased will be gone but his / her registered orchid lives forever and be known worldwide in the orchid circle.

An orchid is registered in the name of a dignitary or head of State visiting Singapore and it is a an honour akin to a knighthood bestored to the visitor. Thus we have Dendrobium Queen Elizebeth .

On my part I have so many named for the reasons stated above.

Phalaenopsis Nanya Chatchom was named as a birthday gift

Dendrobium Helen Lum was named after a friend's wife

Phalaenoposis Eric Simon was named in remembrance of a dearly departed friend

Dendrobium Muhyiddin Yassin was named after the Deputy Prime Minister Malaysia when he officially opened the Hari Peladang in Sungai Siput in 2010

It is a rare honour to have an orchid named after someone you love and nothing can be more unique than this. When I visited The Garden Festival 2006 in Singapore, our Singapore singer, Miss Sun was honoured with a white orchid, Dendrobium Stefanie Sun, a hybrid by the Singapore Botanical Garden. There was a air of importance during the elaborate ceremony during the presentation and it was a proud moment for her as I could see her happily beaming from ear to ear.

In most of my society's activities and shows, I have been the official hybridiser and presenter, naming an orchid after a dignatory. I am very happy and satisfied with this arrangment as I have so many unnamed hybrids of very high show quality and it not only bring honour to the person named but aslo indirectly honour me in the process.

Also one of our society's activity is to teach our members how to select good stud plants for seed propagation and the process of flasking, and growing and eventually naming the orchid after someone. Henceforth, it is what makes orchid growing more passionate and meaningful than just growing it for the sake of growing and collection.

New Blooms from my hybrids

The last few months have been busy months for me and I just cannot find the time to update my blog. A lot of my hybrids are in bloom and I am not sure what fertilizer I have used to cause it to do so. Maybe its the unusual hot and dry weather that is prevalent at this time of the year or it is the numerous types of fertilizers I have been using that I just cannot pinpoint the exact one.

NEW HYBRIDS

I just registered two new hybrids.

First, Phal. Mem. Eric Simon is a cross between my very expensive Phal. Penang Violacea and a green variety of Phal. Billy Wang. I consider it expensive not because I paid a lot for it but contrary, someone offered to buy it for RM3,000. As expected this hybrid produced a form which has the best characteristic from the two parent plants i.e a good form and a greenish color. This very showy hybrid has been registered in memory of my good friend, Eric Simon who passed away recently. He was a committee member of the Selangor Orchid and a Distinguished Associate of OSSEA for the Ferderal Territory. The author of two books, one on orchids and the other on bougainvillas. A staunch supporter of Perak Orchid Society, he would come as a judge for our shows, without fail. He can best be remember for his good sense of humor. My wife, Jessie during a recent show was chatting with him and suddenly she asked for his name when she couldn't recall it. He replied and said "Wah, such good friends and you can forget my name JENNY". His contributions will be remembered and his name will live forever in an orchid named after him.

The next hybrid is a cross between Phal. Penang Ruby and Phal. Soo Kee. Also a very showy hybrid with large flowers and is named after my friend Nanya from Thailand who visited my farm last month.

The flower measures 4.5 x4.5 cm and the color from Phal Penang Ruby is very dominant here.

Phalaenopsis Ang Chee Yang (R447)

(Phal. Penang Ruby x Phal. Tan Lee Moy)

This hybrid was named after my younger brother Raymond Ang to commemorate his 56th birthday.
Most of my hybrids with Phal. Tan Lee Moy as one of its parents, its genetic characteristics are more dominant but in this hybrid, Phal. Penang Ruby characteristics appear to be more dominant.

The colour of its petals and sepals are violet red with faint concentric lines like Phal. Penang Ruby rather than chilli red.

Flower measures 4cmx5cm in size.

The column is white, side-lopes bright yellow and lip dark red in colour.

Phalaenopsis Tay Kok Chye (R436 & R414)

This magnificient hybrid was registered on 7 March 2011 to
commemorate my brother-in-law, Kok Chye's 60th. birthday.
Flower measures 4.5cm x 4.5 cm. Petals and sepals are chilli red in colour and faint darker concentric lines can be seen if viewed closely. The column is light pink and side-lopes are yellow in colour. The lip is violet /red.

Phalaenopsis Permata Rosmah Mansor (R477)

Another fantastic hybrid from my stud plant Phal. Tan Lee Moy. This hybrid as named after the wife of Malaysia Prime Minister, YAB Dato' Seri Najib Tun Razak and presented to her at the National Book Award Gala Dinner in December 2010.
Flower measures 4.5 x 4.5cm in size. Sepals and petals are solid chilli red, a characteristic in many of my hybrids with Phal. Tan Lee Moy as one of its parent. Column is white and side-lopes are yellow. Lip is violet red with a bit of white at its tip.

Tolumnia Lee Wai Qeen. (R321)

Fifth hybrid named after my wife, Jessie Lee. This hybrid is outstanding because of the size of its skirt (lip), measuring 2.5cm x 3.5cm is about the biggest I have ever seen. The flower measures 4cm x 3.5cm. Petals and sepals are dark brown with white edges. The background colour of the lip is light pink with brown spots, larger in the center and finer towards the outer edges. The column and side-lopes are light pink.

NEW HYBRIDS

Phalaenopsis Barbara Chamorro - This hybrid, a second generation Tan Lee Moy, still maintains the bright chilli red colour. Named after Michael Chamorro's mum or my daughter's mother-in-law, the flower measures 4cm x 4cm with a clean chilli red colour. The column is white, side-lopes yellow and lip chilli red. It is a very attractive flower.

Phalaenopsis Robert Ang

Finally an orchid named after myself. I have been quite fastidious in choosing an orchid for myself. I think this is about the best hybrid I have ever done. The colour, shape, size and general appearance is about perfect. This hybrid is 75 percent P. Penang Ruby. I have about 7 P. Penang Ruby as stud plant and this hybrid is by far better than any of my P. Penang Ruby in terms of shape and colour.

Dendrobium Muhyuddin Yassin

This very beautiful hybrid , Den . Muhyuddin Yassin named after the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Hj Mohd Yassin was presented to him on the 5th August 2010 during the opening ceremony of Hari Peladang Penternak or Farmer's Day celebrated from 5th to 8th August 2010 at Ladang Infoternak, Sungai Siput, Perak
The hybrid measuring 6.5cm x 3cm with upright sepals of three twists is dark reddish brown in colour. The dark colouration comes from Den. Black Spider whose genes dominated that of the other parent plant, Den. Ong-Ang Ai Boon which has yellow flowers. All of this hybrid that bloomed have no yellow colouration and almost all are dark brown to black in colour.

This hybrid named after my wife is quite interesting as bloom from one parent plant is yellow and the other red. Quite a number of this hybrid has bloomed and some are yellow, some red and some in between. I have chosen this reddish orange one for the registration.

R447 P cornu-cervi fma. chattaladae

There are a lot of orchid nurseries in Thailand selling this specie and many of my friends who bought the thumbpots found out later that they have been cheated. Many turned out to be normal P cornu-cervi with its bars and all and those who are luckier may get a P thalebanii instead. P cornu-cervi fma. chattaladae is only found in Northern Thailand around Chiengmai and it's quite rare. I suspect that the Thai growers cross P cornu cervi 'chattaladae' with a darker form of P cornu-cervi (maybe thalebanii) and if you are lucky you will get a few red form plants, otherwise you will end up with one that looks like thalebanii.

I bought a few mature plants from a nursery in Chiengmai in late 2007 and when it bloomed, I managed to pollinate and propagated about 200 plants from a seed pod.

Three of the siblings flowered recently and out of the three one of them is quite dark red in color.

I have in my farm, many forms of P cornu cervi eg alba form, thalebanii, 4n, langkawi variety, Sabah variety, and normal Malaysian variety.

R332 P Valentinii 'Red' x P Valerie Ang

Pollinated on 29 May 2006, two plants bloomed in late January. The two blooms show a distinct difference in color and design. P Valerie Ang is a hybrid from P Hsu Li-Shian. The spots and yellow background in the first bloom come from P amboinensis and the red from the other, comes from P George Vasques , the two parents of P Hsu Li Shian.

A very interesting hybrid and I am waiting for some more plants to bloom to see what more surprises it has in store for me.

R443 P Valentinii 'Alba' (P violacea 'Alba' x P cornu cervi 'Alba')
Pollinated on 30 December 2007, this hybrid first bloomed in January 2010. Flower is star shaped and colours of the petals ranged from yellow to green. In this region the green hue is well sought after and similar hybrids with a darker green clour are sold for well above RM1000.
Most of my plants are matured and many are already spiking. Hopefully, I will be able to show in my next few postings a bloom as described above.

R391 P Penang Violacea x P Billy Wang 'Green'

Pollinated on 17 July 2007, 3 plants from this hybrid bloomed in March 2010. The shape is more inclined towards P Penang Violacea whilst the greenish hue comes from P Billy Wang. Flower is round with a good asymmetrical shape. Plant is small and when more matured will definately produce bigger show quality flowers.

R414 P Tan Lee Moy 'Chilli Red' x P Eleanor Loh

This hybrid pollinated on 27 Febuary 2007 gave its first bloom on the 17 March 2010. Since then four other plants bloomed. As they say a picture is worth more than a thousand words, I will therefore not discribe the flowers in detail but suffice to say that this hybrid has the potential to produce show quality flowers.

From the five blooms we can see that P Eleanor Loh features are more dominant here.

R458 P Ong Tin Kok (P Penang Princess x P Penang Ruby) x P Penang Ruby
This new hybrid gave its first bloom on 4 April 2010. Pollinated on 3 September 2007 and deflasked in early 2009 it grew well in moss.. As the seed germination was not so fertile, flasks were not offered for sale. Most of the plants are matured with leaves of between 3-4 inch long.
The flower is round in shape and measures 4 cm x 4 cm. Petals and sepals are maroon red in colour. The Side lopes are bright yellow and lip dark red. The plant is quite small with 4 leaves of about 4 inches long. When it matures further I expect the size of the flower to be larger. A potential hybrid to produce show quality flowers.

R414 (P Eleanor Loh x P Tan Lee Moy)

Three blooms from my crossing P Eleanor Loh x P Tan Lee Moy (R414) show the diversity of shape and color in the offsprings. The first two blooms shown above, are more similar to P Eleanor Loh as the characteristic concentric red design is still dominant while the solid red of the third bloom is more like P Tan Lee Moy. Today one of the plant came in second in the Peral Orchid Society monthly show.
Many of my plants are spiking and I expect to see a lot of show quality blooms from this hybrid.

The month of December saw quite a number of new hybrids being registered in view of the impending increase in the registration fee by RHS. Two new dendrobium hybrids, one a miniature (Den. Hiren Kaur) and the other a normal cane type (Den. Amrit Kaur) were registered in the name of two grand-daughters of my friend of 50 years, Mr Santokh Singh who is living in England now. His son Satwant Singh, the father of the 2 young and pretty girls is also a very close friend of mine.

Phal Adeline Ang is named after my daughter living in Perth. Australia. A showy hybrid of exceptionally quality.

Phal. Nicholas Zhao is named after my grandson ( from my daughter Adeline Ang) who is also living in Perth, Australia. A showy yellow green, cornu cervi type hybrid which is in high demand by collectors in Malaysia.

Phal. Goh Chin Chye is named in honor of my teacher from Anglo Chinese School Singapore who will be celebrating his 90th birthday on 11 December 2009. A dedicated teacher who has nurtured all of us to face the future to become what we are today. This hybrid is characterised more genetically by Phal. Tan Lee Moy as a lot of the flowers show the full dark red color. Occasionally some blooms are with patches like Phal. Hsu Li-Shian.

Phal. Grifinn Chamorro is named after my grandson living in San Francisco, USA. This hybrid is unusual as it is a cross between two other hybrids named after his parents (my daughter Valerie Ang and my son-in-law Micheal Chamorro). Like Phal. Goh Chin Chye, the Phal. Tan Lee Moy characteristic red from Phal. Michael Chamorro is dominant in many of the blooms.

Den Lai Ai Moi is registered in name of our Deputy Secretary of Perak Orchid Society. A donation of RM2000 was donated by her to our Society.

New Hybrids Registered with RHS

Dendrobium Kuok Hock Toh

A primary hybrid of two species i.e Den leporinum 'Alba' x Den antennatum with Den antennatum being more dominant genetically. The hybrid measures 4cm x 2 1/2 cm in size with two green upright petals with a half twist. The sepals are white and the column and side-lopes are lemon yellow. Lip is also lemon yellow with a white patch at the top of the lip. The very distinguishable dark vertical lines found on the lip of Den antennatum is not found in this hybrid but faint lines can be seen if viewed closer.

Phalaenopsis Tosh Chamorro

This hybrid is named after my grandson. One of the parent plant is named after his mother P Valerie Ang. My hybrid P Valerie Ang produces both red and yellow flowers. I used one of the red ones for this crossing. The flower measures 31/2 cm x 3 cm. The petals and sepals are violet red in color. The column is white and side lopes are yellow.The lip is pinkish red in color.
A plant with three blooms was entered in the show on 24 October 2009 (Perak Orchid Society annual Orchid Nite ) and was awarded a third placing in a very strong field.

R13 ( Phal Su-An Cricket x Phal Penang Jewel) was named in honour of Mr Billy Wang (Dongfang Billy) a very close friend of my mother (Hong Mama). He is more like a son to her. Billy, a very popular DJ with Media Corp Radio 97.2 FM channel in Singapore was diagnosed with luekemia in the early 90's and through his faith in Christ he was healed miraculously. He now works towards helping and serving other cancer stricken people and the community in general in Singapore. He is the president of Cancercare Society which he founded in 2003

Phal Billy Wang (Phal Penang Jewel x Phal Su-an Cricket) has been one of my more successful hybrid. Many of this crossing have won prizes in the regional orchid competition. A lot of my flasks were exported to Thailand years back and I am sure it must have been a hit there too especially the green ones. This hybrid makes a good show plant as it is free flowering with many flowers (up to 6 in a spray), good shape and has a variety of colour (White, Yellow and Green)
Apart from its show quality, it also makes a good stud plant. It is easily pollinated both as stud or pod carrier. I have chosen most of the green ones for crossing with others with green flowers. My R328 ( Phal cornu cervi x P Billy Wang) have produced a few green ones but not to the shade that I want it to be. As I have a lot of R328 I am sure a dark green one will bloom very soon. My other crossings with Phal Su-an Cricket, Phal Penang Jewel, Phal Ho's Greem Wave, and Phal Penang Violacea have yet to bloom although some of the plants are already matured. I will feature them when they bloom.

DIRECTI0NS TO EUCHARIST ORCHIDS FARM

Many orchid enthusiasts with intention to visit my farm finds it difficult to locate for the first time as my farm is off the main road.
I have therefore downloaded a map from googles and amended it to show the new
bypass to my farm

If you are driving and are fortunate enough to own a GPS navigational system then just key in the following coordinates and you will have no problem in finding the way to my farm:-

N4.6736980 degrees E101.0871782 degrees

If not then you will have to depend on the map as shown above. If you are coming in from the south, exit the Ipoh Toll. If you miss this toll you will probably have to travel until Kuala Kangsar before you can make a u-turn back.
After paying your toll proceed northwards until you see Jelapang/Chemor exit (Just after Sungei Siput exit). Turn into this bypass and turn right when you see the Chemor Sign. Proceed for another 3-4 km until you see a row of new shop houses. Turn right just before the shop houses and then immediately right again until you see Lintasan Meru Permai 3 when you turn left. Proceed until you come to the end of the road. Turn right into the dirt road and you will see the farm with its distinctive blue roof and orange walls.
If you miss the Jelapang/Chemor bypass, proceed until you come to the Jelapang bypass. Do not go through the toll. At the red light turn right and proceed for another 2-3 km where you will pass KDN (Immigation Office) and a small Indian Temple on your left. You will see a sign which says Simpang Pulai/Kuala Lumpur. Turn right and proceed for 2 km until you see a row of shoplots on your left. Turn left immediately after the shop lots and then immediately right again until Lintasan Meru Permai 3 where you will have to turn left. Proceed to the end of the road and turn right into the dirt path to the farm.
Coming from Penang you will have to turn into Ipoh and make your payment at the toll. After the toll turn left towards Chemor/Jelapang bypass and you will come to the same shoplots.
Its quite easy once you have found it.

I have a collection of good stud Phal bellina and Phal violacea which I use extensively for my propagation of white, red and blue Phal violacea. I have crossed the blue variety with the normal Phal bellina, hoping that the blue strain will cross over to produce a blue bellina of better shape and colour.(R 500 P violacea 'Blue' x P bellina 'Blue', R503 P bellina blue x P bellina, )

I also have the giant variety and the largest measures up to 3 1/2 inch from top to bottom. The one in the photo measures 3.2 inch. Although it is star shaped I manage to cross it with one of my rounder ones and quite a few hybrids produce show quality blooms (R36 , R244)

My stud P bellinas have produced quite a number of show quality plants. Using different P bellina together with the giant ofsprings I hope to propagate a large round form which is in great demand here in Malaysia and Singapore.

I always have a passion for Phal cornu-cervi and when I bought a red coloured Phal Valentinii I wanted to propagate a line of red cornu cervi shaped hybrids. With just a few Phal cornu-cervi and Phal Valentinii I managed to produce a few good star-shaped red orchids eg R3 (Phal Tan Cheng San) R4 (Phal Ang Ai Hue) , R239 (Phal talibanii x Phal Valentinii 'Stripe') and R312 (Phal talebanii x Phal valentinii 'Red'

With the new red hybrids I have crossed it with quite a number of red coloured ones which are larger, rounder and darker red so as to get a better shaped flower with darker colour and rounder form but still maintaining the basic cornu-cervi shape. Most of them are of blooming size and hopefully it will bloom as to my expectation. As its getting qute boring featuring my stud plants one by one, I thought it would be better if I feature more of them in this posting

From L-R Phal amboinensis (Taiwan), Phal amboinensis 'Nicole', Phal amboinensis 'Taiwan', Phal amboinensis 'Malaysia'

My collection of Phal amboinensis is mostly from Taiwan which is larger and rounder in shape. I have chosen the rounder shape and deeper colours for my stud as these qualities are essential in creating a better hybrids. Crossings with Phal Tan Lee Moy and Phal Penang Ruby have produced show quality hybrids like R237 Phal Jessie Ang and R274 Phal Jessie Lee. I have also cross Phal amboinensis 'Nicole' with self (R317) and Phal amboinensis 'Taiwan' with self R67 & R74). Both have produced blooms better than their stud plants.I also expect crossings of Phal amboinensis 'Taiwan' with Phal Eleanor Loh (R358), with Phal belina (R432), and Phal Michael Chamorro (R475) to produce also show quality plants.

Another plant which I use extensively as stud is Phal Eleanor Loh. This hybrid is used mainly for its shape. Crossings with this hybrid is R188 (Phal gigantea x Phal Eleanor Loh), R381 (Phal Michael Chamorrow x Phal Eleanor Loh), R414 (Phal Tan Lee Moy x Phal Eleanor Loh), R470 (Phal Eleanor Loh x Phal Hsu Li-shian) R496 (Phal Eleanor Loh x Phal Poh Ee Huat).R581 (Phal Penang Ruby x Phal Eleanor Loh).

I have a collection of alba form phalaenopsis. It is my intention to produce a green hybrid of good colour shape and form. Genetically the green colour probably came from Phal Penang Jewel. From this hybrid I propagated a few green flower ( R13, and R22) and I have used them to propagate with other green/yellow hybrids, like, Phal Penang Violacea and Phal cornu-cervi.
My new hybrids from these studs have produced some nice green blooms ie R251 (Phal Su-an Cricket x Phal Billy Wang), R277 (Phal Billy Wang Sib),R328 (Phal cornu cervi 'Alba' x Phal Billy Wang), R351 (Penang Jewel x Phal Soo Ngor 'Green') , RR391 (Phal Penang Violacea x Phal Billy Wang 'Green'), and R443 (Phal violacea 'Alba' x Phal cornu-cervi 'Alba').

Phal Penang Ruby

I have a small collection of Phal Penag Ruby (Phal Betty Leong x Phal violacea) which I use extensively for my propagation. I have chosen this hybrid for stud because of its shape , size and colour. Crossings from these studs have produced very good showy blooms especially R274 P Jessie Lee (Phal Penang Ruby x Phal amboinensis) , R 31 P Ong Tin Kok (P Penang Princess x P Penang Ruby) and R 70 P Eleanor Loh ( P Soo Sim x P Penang Ruby). These new hybrids have also been used extensively for my propagation of third or fourth generation new hybrids.

The strong genetic characteristics from Phal Penang Ruby shows very prominently

in Phal Jessie Lee whilst the brown and thick bars from Phal amboinensis is absent

except for a few blooms.

Likewise in Phal Eleanor Loh the thick bars from Phal amboinensis is lost and replaced by finer concentric lines. This is also used as stud in R381 (Phal Michael Chamorro x Phal Eleanor Loh) R414 ( Phal Tan Lee Moy x Phal Eleanor Loh), R436 (Phal Eleanor Loh x Phal Tan Lee Moy), R470 (Phal Eleanor Loh x Phal Hsu Li-Shian ) R496 (Phal Eleanor Loh x Phal Poh Ee Huat) and many others.

Phal Ong Tin Kok also shows that it is more inclined characteristically to Phal Penang Ruby. This hybrid again makes yet another good stud plant for my future propagation. Just to mention a few...R458 (Phal Ong Tin Kok x Phal Phal Penang Ruby), R477 (Phal Tan Lee Moy x Phal Ong Tin Kok) R563 ( Phal Ong Tin Kok x Phal Taipeng Ruby) and many others.

My Stud Plants

1) Phalaenopsis Tan Lee Moy

To be successful as a hybridizer, you need to have a good collection of stud plants. It is true that two good parent plants do not necessary produce good offsprings but it is definitely better if you don't have any good parent plants at all. I will therefore, try to introduce some of my stud plants which I have used to propagate my hybrids with.

Phal Tan Lee Moy
( Phal Batik x Phal amboinensis )

The unique feature of this hybrid is its colour. I have never seen any specie or hybrid with this chilli red colour. This is the only one of this colour from the so many that I have. Most of it has broad patches of brownish red and even then none has this bright chilli red. This characteristic is so dominant that quite a few of my hybrids from this parent have this red colour. My hybrids R14, R18, R233, R231, and R237 produce similiar or better flowers than its parent.

R14 Phal Michael Chamorro (Phal Tan Lee Moy x Phal Valentinii 'Red'

Most of this hybrid (R14) displays similar colour with that of its parent.

R18 P Tan Lee Moy x Hsu Li-Shian
This unregistered hybrid also display the brilliant chilli red colour that's so characteristic of Phal. Tan Lee Moy.

R231 Phal Tan Lee Moy x Phal Soo Kee

This unregistered hybrid also shows the red colour from Phal Tan Lee Moy although in this hybrid the chilli red is not so dominant.

R233 Phal Poh Ee Huat (Phal Tan Lee Moy x Phal violacea 'Malaysia')

This hybrid with Phal violacea 'Malaysia' as the other parent, which has a strong purple red colour, blends the Chilli Red colour of Phal Tan Lee Moy into something very interesting as you can see from the three photographs above.

R237 Phal Jessie Ang (Phal Tan Lee Moy x Phal amboinensis)

The very strong chilli red colour of Phal Tan Lee Moy almost practically obliterated the markings on Phal amboinensis as you can see from the three photographs shown above.

Phal Tan Lee Moy has been extensively used for so many of my other hybids R307, R313, R380,
R412, R414, R436, R449, R451, R466, R467,R469, R473, R477, R483, R513, R523, R527, Etc
all of which have not bloomed yet and when they do they will be posted.

Dendrobium Robert Patrick Ian Balhetchet

A hybrid by crossing D taurinunum with D Penang Little Magic.

The flower resembles more like Den taurinum as characterised by the short horns and broad lip. The flower measures 4cm x 4cm with reddish brown petals. Side-lopes and lip are both violet in colour. As this hybrid other parent is Den Penang Little Magic the size of this plant is comparative short and most are less than 12 inch tall which is suitable for confined conditions.

Dendrobium Lee Wai Qeen

A beautiful hybrid by crossing D Tan Kheng Liang with D tangerinum.

This hybrid is named after my wife Jessie.

As one of the parent plant in Den Tan Kheng Liang is Den Seah Koko, this hybrid maintains the curls which are so characteristic of Den Seah Koko. The strong orange colour comes from Den tangerinum. However other plants from this crossing have darker colours taking more to the characteristic of Den Tan Kheng Liang. Flower measures 7cm x 5cm . Petals are formed with a 4 1/2 twist. The column is purplish and lip is copper brown with purplish strip in the center (a trait from Den tangerinum)

New Hybrids in bloom

Many people have asked me to publish photographs of my new hybrid orchids.

I have chosen a few that are of show quality and I hope you will like them. I propagate by seed and therefore almost every bloom is not identical. Some may be similar but mostly they will not be identical unless it is propagated by meristem. I have chosen the best from the ones that are in bloom and more often than not later blooms are of better quality.
These new hybrids have not been registered yet and in due time I will have them registered with the Royal Horticulture Society (RHS) in London

P violacea 'Alba' x P Ho's Green Wave

Pollinated on March 2003 and first bloomed in December 2007. Petals and sepals are white in colour. Column and lip are also white while the side-lopes are yellow. Flower measures 4cm x 4cm . A showy flower.

R332 P Valerie Ang X P Valentinii 'Red'
This hybrid was pollinated on 29 May 2006 and it bloomed on 12 October 2008. Flower measures 5cm x 4.5 cm. The Petals and sepals are dark red with a bit of yellow at the tips.
Column is white in color, the sie-lopes are yellow and lip dark red. A very free blooming plant.

R310 P Billy Wang x P Penang Jewel

Pollinated on 11 October 2005 and gave its first bloom on 23 January 2009. Petals and sepals are greenish yellow in colour. Subsequent blooms show different degrees of yellow and green. Some are more green whilst some are more toward yellow. As green coloured phalaenopsis is more in demand this is a sort after plant. Column and lip is white whilst side-lopes are yellow. This is also an easy bloomer.

R231 P Tan Lee Moy x P Penang Ruby
Pollinated on 20 May 2004 and gave its first bloom on 25 Febuary 2008. Flower measures 5.5cm x 5.5.cm. Petals and sepals are violet/red in colour with very fine concentric lines. The concentric lines are very fine and connot be distinguished from a distance. Column is white and side lopes are yellow. The violacea-like lip is also the same colour as the petals. The plant needs to be very matured before it blooms.

R346 D taurinum x D Penang Little Magic
(Registered in name of ROBERT PATRICK IAN BALHETCHET)

Pollinated In October 2006 and gave its first bloom on 21 Febuary 2009.
Its petals and lips resemble D taurinum and is red/brown in color.
It measures 4cm x 4 cm .
Column is white with purple streaks.
As one of the parent plant is D Penang Little Magic ( ofspring of D caronii) the actual plant is less than 12 inch high making it a perfect plant to grow in space restricted areas.

R18 P Hsu Li-Shian x P Tan Lee Moy
Pollinated in June 2001 it first blomed in August 2004.
The flower measures 4.5cm x 5 cm. The petals and sepals have a base of light yellow/orannge colour with darker brown/orange markings spread gradually especially in the center. Column and side lopes are yellow. The lip is also yellow with a bit of purple at its tip. Some subsequent blooms are genetically more inclined towards P Tan Lee Moy and therefore they are redder in color.

D tangerinum (Registered in name of Lee Wai Qeen)

Polinated on May 2004 and first bloomed on 18 March 2008.
Flower measures 7cm x 5 cm. Petals are formed with a 4 1/2 twist and are copper brown in color. The column is purplish and lip is coper brown with purple strips in the center. A show quality plant.

R323 D Tan Kheng Liang x D Lim Loong Keng

Polinated in May 2006 and first bloomed on 3 January 2009.
The flower measures 7cm x 4 cm. The petals are formed with 3 1/2 twist and are copper brown in color. Sepals are yellow with copper brown stripes. The lip is brown with purple vertical stripes in the center. This plant is over 2ft in height. A show quality plant.

R322 D Ong-Ang Ai Boon x D Tan Kheng Liang

Polinated In May 2006 and bloomed on 25 Dec 2008.
Flower measures 7cm x 5cm.
Petals are formed with 3 twists and are brownish red in color. The sepals are yellow with brown stripes. Lip, column and side lopes are about the same color as the petals giving it a rather uniform color.
Plant is normally more than 2 ft high and spikes are long with very showy flowers.

It takes at least 1 and half years for dendrobiun and 3 years for phaleanopsis to bloom ( ie From pollination to harvest of pod 2-10 months, Seed flasking to deflask 6-18 months, seedlings to flower 8-24 months). To date I have done about 700 crossings.

R153 D cochloides x D strebloceros

A very showy dendrobium. Flower measures 7cm x 5 cm. The Petals are dark brown in colour (Like P cochloides) while the sepals are grenish yellow with light brown stripes (like D strebloceros) Colum is light green/yellow , side-lopes are dark brown and like is also brown with light yellow patch in the center.
Pollinated on 20 December 2003 it gave its first bloom on 18 August 2007.

R15 P Ambonosa x P Su-An Cricket
A star-shaped flower measuring 4.5cm x 5cm. Petal and sepals are yellow in colour with sparce concentric lines which looks like dots when viewed at a distance. Column and lips are white' Side-lopes are white with yellow at its tips. Pollinated on 21 September 2001 and bloomed in July 2005. Free flowering with many flowers on a single spike.

R74 P Joy Musical Notation 'Joseph Wu" x Kuok Perk Harn
Pollinated on 21 September 2001 and gave its first bloom on 21 January 2005. Flower is very round as both parent plants are very round. measures 5.5cm x 5.5 cm. As both parents have P amboinensis in their blood, it therefore has similiar features as P amboinensis. The base colour is yellowidh white with thick dark brown concentric lines. Column and lip are white while the sid-lopes are yellow. A show quality plant .

R328 P Billy Wang 'Green' x P cornu cervi 'Alba'

A star shaped flower that resembles P cornu cervi. Flower measures 4cm x 4cm. Petals and sepals are yellow/green in colour. The green or yellow colour depends on whether its genetic makeup is more aligned to which parent. As I have mentioned before green phals are more in demand (so is blue). Colum and lip are white and side-lopes are yellow in colour.

P321 P Billy Wang 'Green' x P Su-An Cricket

Flower is star-shaped and measures 53m x 4.5 cm. Petals and sepals are greenish yellow in color. Both column and side-lopes are yellow and lip is white. Like R328 some of subsequent bloom are more greenish. Very showy hybrid.

I registered this orchid hybrid to honour my sister's father-in-law who have been a great help to me when I was in London in 1970.

This hybrid is named after my wife Jessie.

Hue Choo has been the only one, in our family of six, looking after my aged mother. She choose this hybrid because one of the parent of this hybrid is named after her husband Tan Cheng San

Late Poh Ee Huat has been a friend and a brother in Christ to me and his love for orchids goes back to the 70's. This orchid is named after him in memory of the good times we had whether orchid hunting or just drinking a cup of good coffee together.

My Orchid Hybrids

I have during the last 8 years sown over 400 seeds from my dendrobium (horn) and phalaenopsis (novelty) collection and although a lot did not germinate a great proportion did and I grow them mostly in my 1 .1 acrea farm in Jelapang, Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia.

I wanted to do something to keep myself busy. My first crossing was P Su-an Cricket x Hsi Li-Shian and I sent the seed to a friend in Penang to have it sown in a flask.

I went into the internet and did some research and I tried flasking by tial and error. I order some media from USA and I autoclave my flasks in a small pressure cooker. I made a glass chamber from an old aquarium and after a few months and many contaminated flasks I succeeded in growing my orchids in flasks.

When I went to Bangkok some 6 years ago to a orchid show I saw a laminar flasking chamber and I imported it back to Ipoh which I am using till this day.

All this is not possible without the Grace of God who has brought me up and upheld me when I fell to the lowest.
It is not my intelligence or ability but the power of the Holy Spirit working in and through me.

My hybrids are from seed propagation and therefore there is a wide discrepancy in the shape, size and colour for blooms from the same hybrid. If there is a choice I will choose the best for registration but more often then not later blooms are better than the one I registered.
